As
you read this report, the SBTDC has been serving small and medium-sized businesses across
North Carolina for over 22 years.
Through the years, the SBTDC has periodically adjusted its
strategic focus, programs, and services to remain responsive
to changes in our economy and to the needs of North Carolinas
businesses. The one constant, however, has been our deep commitment
to providing clients with the high quality business counseling
and management education services needed to help those clients
succeed.
Our performance over the past year is reflective of this
commitment.
Some highlights include:
- Over 13,000 North Carolinians received business counseling
and management education services.
- Nearly 70,000 individuals visited our website.
- SBTDC clients attracted $170 million in debt, equity,
and other financial support.
- Clients secured $1.1 billion in government
contracts.
- Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards equated to $41.4 million for 2005. This is a 32% increase over the total for 2004. Phase 2 SBIR's increased 56%.
- A very successful pilot project to provide significantly enhanced services in five low-wealth counties has led to a formal SBTDC strategy for expanded services in targeted low-wealth counties across the state.
All in all, it was a good year. The experienced and committed
staff of the SBTDC looks forward to continued service to North
Carolinas businesses and to their success in continued
growth and job creation.

—Scott R. Daugherty, Executive Director
