SBTDC connects Western NC with research dollars

Small research businesses can leverage up to $60,000 in total R&D funding through the NC Strategic Technology Applied Research (STAR) initiative. STAR will fund a small business research project performed in a university lab by university personnel.

The objective of this initiative is to encourage applied research between universities and small-to-medium sized businesses in North Carolina. Note that small business participants must be located in one of the 28 eligible counties served by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) region of North Carolina. Those counties include:

Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Davie, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, McDowell, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Stokes, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin, and Yancey

The collaborating research institution, however, may be located anywhere in North Carolina.

STAR applicants can apply to the SBTDC for up to $20,000 in research funding. The participating small business provides matching funds while the university (or any research institution) provides matching support through a waiver of in-kind of indirect costs.

An application and additional information is available online at http://www.sbtdc.org/technology/STAR.dot.
