Customized Market Research
- Target Market
Analyses — thorough examinations of a client's
current targeted client base, potential customers and active
competitors within a specific geographical region(s). Data
is collected and mapped geographically to help assess the
state of the client's market and formulate recommendations
for future marketing efforts.
- Incubator Feasibility
Studies — generally conducted on behalf of
community groups, local governments, private businesses,
and economic development organizations, these studies are
intended to gauge the operational and financial feasibility
of developing a small business incubator. Local and regional
economic activity, entrepreneurial development, commercial
real estate occupancy, and the opinions of local entrepreneurs
are all evaluated to estimate the level of demand for business
incubation services. Construction/renovation costs, anticipated
operating expenses, potential revenue generation and the
necessary seed funding/subsidy are projected over a three-year
period to determine the project's financial viability.
- Industry Studies — broad examinations of
the state of selected industries. Factors such as industry
size, evolution, structure, employment and sales growth
history and potential, trends, top competitors, potential
customers, suppliers, primary market areas, effects of technology
and government regulation, and international competition
are among the topics researched and analyzed.
- County/Regional Economic Scans — statistical
analyses conducted on behalf of governments and economic
development organizations to better understand and evaluate
the state of their local economy. Among the economic dynamics
discussed are trends in: population figures, educational
attainment, population aging, industrial composition and
growth of establishments and employment, wages and income,
important sub-sectors, unemployment, commuter patterns,
construction permits, retail sales, new incorporations and
top employers.
- GIS-Based Location Analyses — identifications
of optimal market areas for business location or sales territory
designation using licensed geographic information systems
(GIS) software. The Location Analyses use industry trends
along with competitor and potential customer data to determine
best markets for retail and services clients. Supplier and
distributor data are also mapped and assessed depending
on their relevance to the client's business location.
- Detailed Competitor Analyses — in-depth
reports of the major competitors of a client's business.
Competing businesses are mapped geographically and thoroughly
investigated. Among the characteristics investigated are:
major products developed, employment estimates, annual sales
estimates, patents issued, listing of executives, identification
of a parent company or subsidiaries, credit rating, recent
news and activity, and Internet presence. Not all information
may be available for all companies. BRS evaluates the level
of information accessible before entering an agreement.
- Client-Driven Customized Research — The
SBTDC's Business and Research Services will also conduct
client-specified research where able. Work may include:
identifying statistics needed for a business or marketing
plan, investigating general business and industry trends
in marketing or operations, and identifying customers, competitors,
suppliers or distributors.
