Transportation of Government Goods

Are you a freight carrier and want to do business with the federal government?  The Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) is the single manager of Department of Defense (DoD) surface freight movements and is responsible for acceptance and approvals of tenders of service from the U.S. carrier industry.  The SDDC developed the Global Freight Management (GFM) System as a web-based DoD-wide freight traffic management system with a carrier tender database as an integral part.

What are the requirements for becoming a DoD freight carrier?  In order to transport DoD freight, carriers must comply with the requirements of the Freight Carrier Registration Program (FCRP) as well as requirements of the Department of Transportation Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (DOT 49 CFR), and SDDC Freight Traffic Rules Publication (MFTRP).  Carriers must also have a Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC), which can be obtained at the National Motor Freight Traffic Association’s web site.  An agreement with US Bank and PowerTrack certification is also required in order to receive electronic payment for transportation services.  Carriers must also have capability of being bonded.  The amount of the bond is based on the size of the company and the number of states you intend to serve.  Of course, carriers must maintain valid operating certificates for its scope of operations.

Detailed registration instructions can be found by visiting the SDDC’s “Doing Business with SDDC” web site, then on “freight carrier registration instructions” on the right-hand column for the more detailed instructions.  More information can be found by clicking on “global cargo distribution” from this website.
