The awards data for the first half of the NC PTAC program year has been submitted to Defense Logistics Agency. A review of these awards shows the total is slightly higher than for the same period last year at $341,339,618. Using the Department of Defense algorithm, this equates to 6,937 jobs created.

The part that is of most interest is the fact that, though the dollar figure is above last year, there are many more contract awards to different companies. There were 941 prime contracts awarded. This is approximately a 30% increase. So, we have more companies receiving awards. Additionally, there were 257 subcontract awards, again, an increase of 19%. With such increases, this will be a very interesting year and I look forward to the final report and the statistical distribution that report will show. So, when the survey comes out in early January 2008, please be sure to complete and return.

Planning has started for Opportunities 2008. The event will again be held at the fabulous Grove Park Inn in Asheville. The date is March 10. Mark your calendars and watch for the registration information. This is always a premiere event and the benefits are tremendous. A company wanting to sell to the government cannot afford to miss this one-day program. We will always owe a deep debt of gratitude to former Congressman Charles Taylor for starting this program and supporting its continuance under the auspices of the SBTDC and the NC PTAC even after he has left Congress.

Outside The Box Inc. Leverages PTAC Experience

Out The Box - Solitude

Pineville, N.C. was awarded a contract with FISC (Navy) Jacksonville to supply 2000 pieces of The Solitude W/Linx Audio Active Noise Canceling Headphone. The contract was awarded on September 21, 2007 and is worth $288,000.00. The headphones will be distributed to bases around the globe.

John Alderman, Director of Business Development for Outside The Box, Inc credits the NC Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) located at the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) in Charlotte, N.C. with providing him with valuable information regarding the logistics of responding to federal and DOD solicitations. This information included small business and minority owned business information, Central Contractor Registration, along with insight to federal buying guidelines.

Mr. Alderman stated that "the Charlotte PTAC Counselor was very helpful in making sure that I understood the requirements to do business with federal and state governments. His many years experience as a contracting officer for The United States Air Force makes him an excellent person to speak with for this type of information. Without it, I may still be looking for some of the answers." Learn more about Outside The Box...

Accepting Government Credit Cards

As much as ninety percent of all government small purchases are bought with a government-backed credit card.  Whether it is the Federal Government’s Government Purchase Card (GPC) or the State of North Carolina’s P-Card, government entities require a more detailed level of transaction information that is generated by many vendors.

There are three levels of credit card processing, with each providing a higher level of information about the purchase.  Read on to learn about these levels...

Have You Received a "No-Match" Letter? bar

Small Business Owners, “Will you know what to do if you get a “No-Match” letter from the Social Security Administration?”

A No-Match letter is designed to identify an employee who may be using an illegal social security number.  Small Business owners (SBs) who employ immigrants may receive a “No-Match” letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA).  This is how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is checking the legal status of your employees. In effect, it's part of the wider government crackdown to ensure all workers across the country are legally authorized to work in the United States. The DHS recently released its "No-Match" regulation, 8 CFR Part 274a, which took effect September 14, 2007.  The objective is to make it harder for illegal immigrants to use phony Social Security numbers to get a job. SBs will soon receive their No-Match letters from the SSA for any employee whose name and Social Security number do not match government records. Read more...
