"Nexus"? Word may mean NC boat builders pay additional tax

Boat builders that export boats or even provide warranty or other services to those boats in other states may be exposed to demands from those states for sales income tax payments.

According to NMMA, dozens of marine manufacturers have unknowingly established "nexus" in a state and have been forced to pay more than $250,000 in back taxes, fines, and interest. NMMA is setting-up a phone conference for members to hear state tax experts detail specific marine industry business practices that may establish nexus, provide in-house solutions to avoid tax penalties, and provide answers to questions from participants.
