What do you think success looks like for your business? I mean real success! Does your definition of success keep changing? If you honestly want to be successful, you need clear goals and everyone around you needs to know what they are, so they can support you.
In effect, goal statements pose the question: what will be accomplished? By contrast, objectives specify what work will be done, by whom, and by when. To a large degree, attaining your goals is a matter of making the most of what you have in a way that is additive or even multiplicative. From this perspective, even moving backwards and learning from the experience is a net gain.
Staying focused on your goals and trying to do the right things for the right reasons at the right time can be challenging, but it’s what leaders do or try very hard to do. Quoting my favorite millennials-old source:
“When it’s obvious that the goal cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps (i.e., the objectives).” -Confucius
Interestingly, modern millennials seem to be channeling Confucius when they talk about the concept of pivoting.
