The Tech Commercialization Counselor is a professional position at the Small Business and Technology Development Center’s (SBTDC) regional service center at UNCG through which the SBTDC's counseling, training, research and technical assistance services are provided to small business owners, entrepreneurs and individuals and firms developing new products, technologies or markets. The primary mission of the SBTDC is to support economic development in North Carolina by providing assistance in the start-up, successful operation and expansion of small businesses and by facilitating technology development and commercialization within the state’s small business community. This position is expected to provide a broad range of business advice and in-depth assistance to a sizable number of clients, primarily with companies located in the regional-multi-county geographic area but also throughout the state of North Carolina. It will report programmatically to the Director of Technology Commercialization Services and administratively to the Asst. Regional Director at UNCG.
The position has five principal functions:
Counseling. To provide confidential business and technology development counseling services to emerging NC businesses, entrepreneurs and university faculty, with a focus on companies commercializing energy efficiency, green, and clean technologies but also include a portfolio of biotechnology, nanotechnology, engineering, and information technology companies.
Marketing and Outreach. To represent the SBTDC throughout the technology business community in the Triad Region (and statewide when appropriate), to act as a technology transfer liaison to UNCG and other regional universities, to act as a liaison with Triad and statewide energy/green/clean tech affiliate organizations, and to assist with other technology business development efforts in the Triad.
Administration. To maintain confidential client records, produce timely client reports, create quarterly performance reports for the SBTDC, contribute to the annual Technology Group strategic plan, and perform other administrative duties as required.
Training. To organize and participate in public educational events related to technology commercialization and to produce educational and instructional materials as requested.
Student/Faculty Involvement. To manage SBTDC student interns and interact with faculty.

The primary responsibilities for counseling business owners on how to do business with federal, state and local governments. Design and deliver training programs related to selling to federal, state and local governments. Market the SBTDC and prospect for potential clients.
