Position Title: Regional Director SBTDC
Location of Workplace: Main UNCW Campus
Summary of Position: The Director provides independent leadership and oversight of the programming and activities for a Regional Service Center serving a large multi-county region in the delivery of counseling, training, research and technical assistance services to small business owners/would-be entrepreneurs and to individuals and firms developing new products technologies or markets. This includes responsibility for management of the office and special program operational responsibilities for UNCW beyond those usual for a Regional Service Center Director. The incumbent serves as the primary point of contact and liaison between the SBTDC and a broad range of public and private organizations across the region.
Minimum Requirements: A Master’s Degree in business or other relevant field or a Bachelor’s Degree and significantly greater relevant work experience that the minimum. Seven years of progressively responsible senior management experience. Prior business ownership or management consulting. Experience in management education environment may be a plus. He/she will be expected to manage a professional staff of four to six persons, support staff and a number of graduate student assistants along with the attendant budget. Strong analytical and planning abilities and outstanding written and oral communication skills are expected. The selected candidate also must have an ability to develop and manage multiple projects and a proven ability to work effectively with and within both the academic and business communities.
Preferred Qualifications: Broad general knowledge of business principals and practices and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required. Ability to develop and manage projects and proven ability to work effectively with both the academic and business communities. Small business ownership or management experience is strongly preferred. Consulting experience, particularly in a small business setting. Ability to develop, strengthen and lead strong programs / initiatives; establish and maintain strong partnership relationships; and manage / mentor professional staff / build a team. Must be able to navigate the university environment, work autonomously and manage multiple projects and communicate well both verbally and in writing
Primary Function of Organizational Unit: The NC Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC), an inter-institutional program within UNCW, supports economic development in the state by providing assistance in the start-up, expansin, and successful operation of small business and by facilitating technology development and transfer within the state’s small business community. In carrying out this mission, the SBTDC cooperates with and fully utilizes a broad range of existing programs and other resources within the state, in addition to helping to focus the academic reaources and research products of the university on the resolution of community and regional issues. Since its inception in late 1984, clients have benefited from direct one-on-one counseling and assistance services from the SBTDC headquarters in Raleigh and regional offices on the various campuses. In addition, the SBTDC provides circuit-riding services in a dozen other locations across the state, maintains a toll-free statewide Small Business hotline and provides training programs, workshops and seminars designed to meet specialized training needs or to serve markets which are not otherwise adequately served.
