Mind Your Business

By Noah Robins, PTAC Counselor at Western Carolina University

Mind Your Business, Inc., a background investigation company located in Hendersonville, North Carolina is a true testament to the value of vision, hard work, and self-belief. Mind Your Business had humble beginnings, launched in 1996 by owner Karen Caruso in her basement. Originally Karen sought to find a nanny for her own children, and having difficulty locating a company that would screen applicants on behalf of private individuals, found her original niche. While still offering services to individuals, the company has expanded to becoming a leading provider of background investigations for the commercial sector, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) investigations, and drug screening services for commercial customers in a wide range of industries. The company stresses customer service as a key component of its activities, and boasts high levels of customer satisfaction and retention. The company’s diverse portfolio of offerings includes pre-employment screening, drug testing, criminal background checks, work and personal reference checks, and professional license verification.

Early on, Mind Your Business targeted the government as a strong potential market, but lacked the background knowledge and experience to successfully sell to government agencies. The company has worked with North Carolina PTAC since 2005, and PTAC assistance has covered virtually every topic in the government contracting arena. PTAC counselors have helped the client navigate registrations and business development program certifications, explained requirements of specific solicitations, reviewed bid and proposal documents, strategic planning to help client map out its approach to the 8(a) program, and advice and planning on marketing to the government. Mind Your Business has accomplished impressive results in government sales, including award of a GSA schedule contract for background screening and EEO services, certification as an 8(a) firm by the Small Business Administration (SBA), recognition for owner Karen Caruso as the NC Small Business Person of the Year in 2011, and countless contract awards across a broad range of Federal, state and local agencies. The business has steadily grown their government sales to an all-time high in 2015, with no sign of slowing down. Most recently, MYB was awarded a contract with The Army Office of the Chief of Chaplains (OCCH) making them the official global contractor to conduct its screening and background checking for individuals who come into regular contact with children through the Army Chaplain Corps Programs and Activities. MYB is honored to be partnering with OCCH on this project.
